WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a Warm Springs, Ore., tribal policeman is on administrative leave after a 22-year-old Madras man was fatally shot during a traffic stop on the reservation.

The FBI and state police are investigating the Sunday night shooting at the tribe’s wood products mill.

The FBI identified the victim as Vernon Middleton Jr.

Warm Springs police said Monday that two officers were involved in the traffic stop, which involved a car carrying two people. Warm Springs Public Safety Director Stanley Suenaga said the stop became a confrontation that ended with the fatal shooting. KTVZ says the second person in the stopped car was not injured.

Suenaga says one officer suffered minor injuries while the other was unhurt. Neither has been identified.
