WARM SPRINGS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a Warm Springs tribal policeman is on administrative leave after being involved in the shooting a 22-year-old Madras man during a traffic stop on the reservation.

The FBI and state police are investigating the Sunday night shooting at the tribe’s wood products mill.

The FBI identified the victim as Vernon Middleton Jr.

Warm Springs police have not identified the officer, but say he was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

KTVZ in Bend reports that a second person in the car with Middleton, a tribal member, was not hurt.

FBI spokeswoman Beth Ann Steele says it is normal for outside agencies to be called in to investigate a shooting involving a police officer, and the FBI regularly handles cases on Indian reservations.
