High school students in Southwest Washington’s 3rd Congressional District have until April 8 to submit work for the 2011 Congressional Art Competition in Washington, D.C.

The contest is open to all students in grades 9-12 who reside or attend school in the district of U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas.

The competition winner will have his or her artwork displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol Building Corridor. Winners receive free airfare for three people to attend the June ribbon-cutting ceremony in Washington.

Entries must be submitted electronically, via digital photo. They must be original in concept, design and execution.

Eligible art must be two-dimensional, framed, and can be no larger than 28 inches high, 28 inches wide and 4 inches deep.

Accepted mediums include: paintings using oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.; drawings with pastels, pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, ink, markers; collages; prints, including lithographs, silk-screen, block prints; mixed media, or use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.; computer-generated art; and photography.

Entries will be evaluated by a judging panel from the seven counties in Herrera Beutler’s district. Second- and third-place winners will be displayed in her office for the next year.
