SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The man charged with placing a bomb along the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Spokane is scheduled to appear in federal court Wednesday.

Kevin Harpham (har’-pum) is charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and unauthorized possession of an unregistered explosive device. His case was to be presented to a federal grand jury in Spokane on Tuesday for possible indictment. Grand jury proceedings are closed.

The 36-year-old is from Addy, a town north of Spokane, and has extensive ties to white supremacist groups.

The pipe bomb was found the morning of the parade, Jan. 17, and disabled before it could explode. Harphum was arrested at his home on March 9.
