SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Senate is nearing a vote on a bill that would allow some illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at Oregon universities.

A vote could come as early as Thursday.

Supporters of the legislation say many high school students brought to the United States illegally by their parents had no say in the decision to emigrate, so they deserve an opportunity to get an affordable education.

Opponents say illegal immigrants shouldn’t get a benefit that isn’t available to American citizens who live in other states.

Immigrants who have completed at least three years of high school education in Oregon would be eligible.

The bill has bipartisan support and passed the Senate Education and Workforce Development Committee on a 4-1 vote last week.
