MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has applied to host the figure skating world championships, which were canceled in Tokyo after the recent earthquake and tsunami.
The Russian figure skating federation says it sent a proposal to the International Skating Union to hold the event.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke in favor of the bid, saying “this is not a very expensive event and we are capable of taking care of all the expenses.”
Russia hosted the 2005 figure skating worlds at the Luzhniki sports complex in central Moscow. But the ITAR-Tass news agency quoted federation president Alexander Gorshkov as saying that the most likely venue for the championships would be the newer Megasport arena.
