Talking Points 3/22

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:
1
Somebody from the state of Washington needs to plant evidence on North Carolina and make sure the Tar Heels are banned from postseason play for the next decade or so.
Sure, the Tar Heels are legendary, a major player in March Madness. But we don’t need no stinkin’ Tar Heels.
On Sunday, the Tar Heels ended Washington’s season. Even got a little home-state cookin’ with the clock. (The game was played in Carolina.)
Last year, the Tar Heels did not make it to the NCAA tournament. (And, yet the world survived. So we should probably strive for that scenario again!)
In 2009, North Carolina ended Gonzaga’s run.
And in 2008, Washington State made it to the Sweet 16 before losing to, yep, those Heels.
So yeah, we’re pretty sick of North Carolina. Besides, Tar Heel is a dumb nickname anyway.

Have to say we loved the new TV format for Thursday and Friday of the NCAA tournament. Every game was shown, from start to finish. Just had to find the one you wanted on the remote. No problem.
Over the weekend, though, the first two games were shown only on CBS, so there were no other games to switch to if one got boring.
While that might have driven some of us crazy, it made good business sense. The TV people knew that no one was watching the commercials on Thursday and Friday. Fans just switched to another game.
But with the Saturday and Sunday format, with the first two games on the main network, the theory was there would be less channel-surfing.
If that’s what we have to endure for the freedom to roam on Thursday and Friday, we’ll take it.
