SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in Marion County say the tax assessor has been found dead of a gunshot wound that apparently was self-inflicted.

A sheriff’s department spokesman says a friend he’d invited for a visit Tuesday night found the body of 54-year-old Richard Kreitzer. He was in the back yard of his rural Salem home.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports that Kreitzer was re-elected in November to a second term as county assessor.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
