Family of man killed by Bainbridge police suing

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — The family of a Bainbridge Island who was killed by police is suing the police department in federal court over the shooting.

The family of Douglas Ostling says officers used deadly force unreasonably last October against the 43-year-old. They say he committed no crime and posed no threat.

The Kitsap Sun reports officers had responded to an incoherent 911 call and said Ostling threatened them with an ax when they attempted to open the door to his room.

The Kitsap County prosecutor determined the shooting was justified.

Ostling was wounded in the leg and bled to death. The family says police waited more than an hour before allowing aid.
