PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — The National Park Service says it will cost less than estimated to remove two dams and restore the Elwha River on the Olympic Peninsula.
Park spokesman Dave Reynolds told the Peninsula Daily News the restoration cost is now put at $325 million, compared with the previous estimate of $351 million.
Reynolds attributed the decrease to a lower-than-expected contract for removing the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams. The work was estimated at $119 million, but Barnard Construction Co. of Bozeman, Mont., won the job with a $27 million contract.
Dam removal is to begin in September and should be finished in three years.
