EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — A Douglas County sheriff’s officer says workers at an East Wenatchee landfill were startled to see a man climb out of a garbage-filled trailer.

Says Undersheriff Don Culp, “That kind of thing doesn’t happen every day.”

Culp says the 44-year-old Wenatchee man had apparently gotten into the trailer when it was parked at a transfer station. The man told deputies he had been hiding because he thought people were chasing him. The man rode about eight miles in the trailer, then crawled out Tuesday afternoon at the landfill.

Culp says it’s a wonder the man didn’t get hurt or killed.

The undersheriff says the man asked deputies to take him to Central Washington Hospital, where he had a mental-health evaluation.
