TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is defending Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip as legitimate self defense.

Israel has carried out a series of airstrikes on Gaza targets in recent days in response to continued rocket and mortar shells fired into southern Israel. Adding to the tensions, Israel is blaming Palestinian militants for a bombing in Jerusalem on Wednesday that killed a 59-year-old British woman.

Gates said during a stop in Tel Aviv that Israel has a right to “bring justice to the perpetrators of these repugnant attacks.”

He spoke during a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Barak.
