USFS to help three streams

CHELATCHIE — Comments will be accepted until Monday on plans by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to place logs in Pine Creek, Slide Creek and the Green Fork of the East Fork of the Lewis River.

Helicopters will be used to place a variety of log structures. The logs will capture spawning gravel, create slow-water pockets for young fish and create resting areas for steelhead and bull trout.

A copy of the preliminary analysis may be downloaded at www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/04/projects.

Slots open for kids fishing event

Registration is open for the 12th annual Klineline Kids Fishing event on April 9 at Klineline Pond in Salmon Creek Park.

Open to the first 1,600 who register, the event is for youth ages 5 through 14. It costs $5 per child, who receive a free Zebco rod and reel.

Registration forms are available at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, 2108 Grand Blvd. Participants sign up for 45-minute fishing times, beginning on the hour from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Spots remain open for noon through 3 p.m.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. on April 1. Registration will not be accepted by telephone.

A portion of Klineline Pond will be netted off and stocked with rainbow trout for the event. The limit is two fish.

Sponsors also are needed, said Wil Morrison, secretary of Klineline Kids Fishing.

Donations of $250 or more are sought. The donation will result in the printing of business logos on each child’s T-shirt and space to hang a banner at the event.

Gorge hiking trails to be detailed

PORTLAND — Author Craig Romano will discuss hiking in the Columbia River Gorge at 7 p.m. April 6 at the Mazamas headquarters, 527 S.E. 43rd Ave.

Romano is the author of “Day Hiking: Columbia River Gorge.’’ The book features 100 trails.
