A Camas High School squad repeated as Knowledge Bowl state champions on Saturday, while other local teams earned high finishes.

Coached by CHS physics teacher Dale Croswell, the Papermakers earned the Washington 3A crown at Highland High School in Richland, home to the 2A-3A-4A state championship finals.

The all-seniors team included captain Ryan Gompertz, Chris Emmet, Chris Grote, Nicholas Lim, Alec Maier and Jacob Freeman. All but Freeman were part of last year’s title winner.

“Pretty cool, we’re pretty excited,” Croswell reported by telephone.

A Skyview High School team was runner-up at the 4A level, he said.

One team each from Union and Mountain View high schools also placed high in 4A and 3A final rounds, Croswell said.

A second Mountain View team failed to reach the final round.

The Camas team is again likely to earn an invite to one of three national competitions, held near Washington, D.C., Croswell said. The squad would need to fund its own trip, as it did last year.
