Verlander throws 7 impressive innings, beats Phils

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Justin Verlander tuned up for his opening-day start by pitching seven impressive innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 Saturday.

Verlander allowed one run and five hits, striking out three and walking none. Making his final spring start, he lowered his exhibition ERA to 0.96.

Verlander will pitch for the Tigers when they open Thursday afternoon against the Yankees in New York.

Ryan Raburn and minor leaguer Deik Scram homered for the Tigers.

hit a two-run homer in the eight to break a 1-1 tie. Ryan Raburn also homered for the Tigers.
