SEATTLE (AP) — The 20-year-old Seattle man killed in an avalanche at Stevens Pass may have been a University of Washington student.

His identity has not yet been confirmed by the King County medical examiner’s office, but sheriiff’s Sgt. John Urquhart says he was with three other 20-year-old UW students.

They were snowboarding Sunday in an out-of-bounds area of the Stevens Pass ski area known as Cowboy Mountain. The victim went down the hill in a slightly different direction from his friends and was hit from behind by the avalanche. He was carried by the snow into a tree and injured.

The friends called for help and dug him out. He was not breathing and could not be revived by CPR.
