Talking Points 3/28

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Did the NCAA men’s basketball tournament committee get it wrong, or what?

For the first time, the Final Four won’t have any No. 1 seeds or No. 2 seeds.

UConn will carry the “highest seed remaining” flag to Houston as they were given a No. 3 seed way back on March 13.

So is this good or bad?

CBS probably isn’t doing cartwheels over losing eight top teams, but on the other hand, we are guaranteed a “Cinderella” against an established program.

That could be fun.

2

On the other end of the postseason basketball experience is the ridiculous best-of-three final for the College Basketball Invitational title.

The main storyline here is Oregon coach Dana Altman facing his old team at Creighton, beginning tonight in Nebraska.

It’s really sad that we have to have three additional postseason basketball tournaments running alongside the NCAA Tournament.

Attendance at these CBI games shows interest is minimal outside of the Big Dance.

Equally as sad is considering that Oregon’s first “championship” banner for their new arena could come from this event.

Baseball fans tend to be purists. They don’t care much for change.

However, this season does bring some change.

Instead of opening the season on Monday, April 4, the powers that be decided Thursday, March 31 would be better.

It would be better if all the teams were playing that day. As it is, there are only six games scheduled.
