PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Mets left fielder Jason Bay has returned to New York for tests on his strained left rib cage muscle.
Bay left Florida on Wednesday morning, and the team expects to know more details about the injury later in the day. He began feeling discomfort during batting practice on Tuesday.
It is unclear whether the issue is related to the back stiffness that shelved Bay on Saturday and Sunday. He was set to return to the field Monday but the game was rained out. He was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup against the Nationals.
The Mets have until 11 a.m. Thursday to make a roster move if Bay needs to go on the disabled list. Lucas Duda remains in camp and could earn a spot.
