A pedestrian who was hit by a car in Hazel Dell late Monday night is recovering in a hospital.

The accident occurred near Northeast 63rd Street and Highway 99, where the pedestrian was struck by a southbound car about 10:15 p.m.

The driver, Petra J. Galvan, 59, of Vancouver, stopped after hitting the man and called 911. Galvan and the pedestrian, 29-year-old Samuel Beard of Vancouver, were identified by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

Beard was in and out of consciousness when the first emergency units arrived. He had regained consciousness when an AMR Northwest ambulance crew took him to Southwest Washington Medical Center.

Beard suffered significant injuries to his left side but was expected to survive, said Sgt. Randon Walker of the sheriff’s office. Beard was listed in satisfactory condition at the medical center Tuesday night, a nursing supervisor said.

Based on preliminary indications, Galvan was headed south in the left lane with a green light and hadn’t been drinking or speeding, Walker said.

But she allegedly was driving with a suspended license.

She told deputies that Beard suddenly appeared in front of her and she hit him.

Walker said the man was crossing the highway against the light, meaning there was a red light for him.

There was some initial uncertainty whether the pedestrian was in the crosswalk. Walker said Beard was in or near the crosswalk.

Dawn Johnson, spokeswoman for Fire District 6, said in a press bulletin that firefighters told her Beard was not at the intersection or in a crosswalk, and that he wore dark clothing.

Johnson said the man was hit while crossing between the 6100 block of the highway and 63rd Street, just south of 63rd.

Deputy Jim Payne with the sheriff’s Traffic Unit was leading the investigation.
