SEATTLE (AP) — A group that hopes to force a public vote on a planned highway tunnel under downtown Seattle submitted 29,000 signatures Tuesday to the city clerk.
The group “Protect Seattle Now” says that’s more than enough for a referendum election in August, if city officials allow the measure on the ballot. It would overturn the city’s agreements with the state to replace the earthquake-vulnerable Alaskan Way Viaduct with the tunnel.
“Protect Seattle Now” calls the tunnel project risky and expensive. It’s supporting Mayor Mike McGinn who fears city taxpayers will be stuck with cost overruns.
