MONTREAL (AP) — The World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to challenge the Spanish cycling federation’s refusal to sanction Alberto Contador on a doping charge.

WADA says it filed an appeal against Contador’s acquittal after he tested positive for clenbuterol on July 21, 2010. Four days later, Contador completed his third Tour de France victory.

The International Cycling Union announced last week it is pursuing Contador at the CAS in Lausanne, Switzerland.

CAS is aiming to give a verdict before the Tour starts July 2.

If the court dismisses the appeals, Contador could then defend his Tour title.

Spanish officials accepted Contador’s explanation that he inadvertently consumed the drug in contaminated beef.
