PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A United Airlines spokesman says a flight bound from Washington, D.C., to Portland, Ore. was diverted to Chicago for several hours because of security concerns involving passengers.

Airline spokesman Rahsaan Johnson tells KGW-TV of Portland that two to three passengers on Flight 251 were not following crew members’ instructions. He said the flight was diverted to O’Hare International Airport at about 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday.

Passengers reportedly were taken off the plane and re-screened through security.

Johnson says the passengers who failed to follow instructions were not on board when the diverted flight left Chicago for Portland. He couldn’t say whether they were detained or prohibited from boarding the plane.

The flight was headed from Dulles International Airport to Portland International.

Johnson characterized the incident as “not common, but not unusual.”

The flight landed at 12:51 a.m. in Portland.
