SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A University of Oregon proposal for more independence has been tabled, at least for now.

Gov. John Kitzhaber’s office and university president Richard Lariviere said Wednesday that they agreed the proposal should be put on hold until next year.

Kitzhaber says in a letter dated Tuesday that his priority this year is creating a kindergarten-to-grad school board managing all of public education. He tells Lariviere in the letter that he’s open to reviewing the UO’s proposal during the Legislature’s 2012 session.

Lariviere had asked lawmakers to make UO an independent state agency with its own board of directors and funding from a voter-approved endowment. The university is currently part of the Oregon University System and is governed by the State Board of Higher Education with funding controlled by the Legislature.
