WILSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Seven malnourished Kiger mustangs from a herd that a Burns, Ore., man is accused of neglecting have crossed the Cascade Mountains to recover.

Stacey Harnew-Swanson and her husband own Wild Horse Mountain Ranch in Sherwood, southwest of Portland. They volunteered to rehabilitate the horses that arrived Thursday.

Harnew-Swanson says the horses range in age from 5 to 23.

They will be housed initially at the Nine Star Ranch in Wilsonville.

A former wrangler at the federal Bureau of Land Management’s wild horse corrals near Burns is accused of failing to properly care for more than 20 Kiger mustangs he owned. One horse died.

Harney County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Ellis said earlier that Tim Westfall has been charged with 22 counts of second-degree animal neglect and a single count of first-degree animal neglect.

A BLM spokeswoman tells The Oregonian that Westfall began working at the wild horse corrals last August but isn’t currently employed there.
