STEVENS PASS, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Transportation Department has reopened U.S. Highway 2 over Stevens Pass to passenger vehicles.

Transportation officials say a detour is still in place near Leavenworth because of a mudslide. No trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds are allowed on the detour route.

The pass reopened at 5 p.m. Friday. It had been closed since about 5 a.m. Thursday when an avalanche covered all lanes under about 15 feet of snow.

Spokesman Jeff Adamson says crews using artillery and explosives brought down more snow at four other avalanche chutes, and crews have been busy moving it off the highway.

Crews continue clearing the mudslide that covered the highway at Tumwater Canyon near Leavenworth.
