SAO PAULO (AP) — Heavy rain caused havoc at the start of IndyCar’s Sao Paulo 300, taking several drivers out of contention and forcing the race to be stopped after only nine laps on Sunday.

Danica Patrick, Simona de Silvestro and Helio Castroneves were involved in an accident at the first corner, and front-row starters Ryan Hunter-Reay, Tony Kanaan and Oriol Servia also didn’t make it cleanly through the tight first chicane at the 2.5-mile, 11-turn Anhembi temporary street circuit.

The crews were allowed to work on the cars that were damaged during the 2 hours, 23 minutes the race was red-flagged.

All the cars went back out under a yellow flag in attempt to help dry the track, but the red flag came back out after only four laps.
