Shahala science team advances to finals

Washington, D.C. — Evergreen Public Schools’ Shahala Middle School and Gale Ranch Middle School from San Ramon, Calif. are the top two finalists in the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl competition.

The final match will take place at the National Building Museum this morning. Both schools have already won $1,000 for their high school science departments, according to a news release.

They were among 41 middle school teams from around the nation that competed in round-robin matches and triumphed in double-elimination rounds on Saturday. On Sunday, the 41 schools raced hydrogen fuel cell model cars have designed and built.

There will be a live webcast of today’s championship rounds beginning at 9:30 a.m., plus remarks by Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and the awards ceremony that follows. The webcast may be viewed at: http://www.science.energy.gov/nsb/.
