Letter: Reflect on sacrifices of others

Correction: In an April 28 letter to the editor, the quotation, “I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country,” should have been attributed to Nathan Hale. The quotation was incorrectly attributed in the letter.

At Easter Mass, a lady in front of me thanked me for my patriotism. She must have seen my American flag and my U.S. Army star on either side of my personal “Delta” plate. Several people have done everything from saluting to even giving me the one-fingered peace sign.

It is with great honor that I served as a Delta member and I am thankful for the salutations. But the real heroes are not here, they are dead. We owe them an eternal depth of gratitude that no thanks can repay. So this Easter season I was honored by several people and I can only thank our Lord who has shown us the way and belief that we shall rise again.

Remember, it’s “not what your country can do for you,” it is “what you can do for your country” and fellow patriots. And, as Nathan Hale so aptly said, “I regret that I only have but one life to give for my country.” All of us are greatly beholding to those who died or suffered for us.
