Prevailing in a penalty-kick tiebreaker on Sunday, the Vancouver United Soccer Alliance Timbers Blues won the Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup state tournament at Tukwila.

Beating Eastside White 1-0, the Timbers won the girls under-13 age division of the mid-level state soccer tournament. The VUSA team will represent Washington at a U.S. Youth Soccer Presidents Cup tournament in June in Utah.

VUSA goalkeeper Liliana Delgadillo made two saves in the tiebreaker. Delgadillo, Emily Armstrong, Taylor Germer, Alexis Williams made their penalty kicks for the Timbers.

The same two teams met for the under-12 Challenge Cup title in 2010, with Eastside winning on a penalty kick in the second overtime.

The Timbers reached the finals by defeating FC Edmonds 2-0 in Saturday’s semifinals. Kaili Brundage and Nicolle Ohama scored in the semifinal victory.

This is the third year in a row that this team made the state semifinals, and its first state titles.

Players for the Challenge Cup winners are Emily Armstrong, Desiree Arocha, Nattali Baiar, Kaili Brundage, Makyla Croco, Liliana Delgadillo, Taylor Germer, Kelsee Hillard, Sarah Kleier, Alix Kopf, Nalealani Mawae, Nicolle Ohama, Hunter Thomson-Terrel, and Alexis Williams. The head coach is Charlie Kleier, assisted by Beth Ann Kopf and Esteban Delgadillo.

Another VUSA Timbers girls team, the under-16 Red team, advanced to the semifinals of the top state tournament. The Timbers beat West Sound 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Washington Youth Soccer Championship Cup. The semifinals are on May 7 and the finals on May 8 in Tukwila.

Championship Cup winners advance to play in the U.S. Youth Soccer Western Regional championship tournament.

Also in Championship Cup play, the VUSA Timbers Red fell to Eastside FC Red in the girls under-15 quarterfinals.

In other girls Challenge Cup divisions, VUSA Timbers teams lost in the under-14 semifinals and in the under-15 quarterfinals.
