The Battle Ground girls basketball coaching position is open, but the person who has had the job the past four seasons said she will re-apply.

Nancy Roegner wants to continue working with the program.

“We got better each year,” she said.

This past season, the Tigers went 13-8 and finished third in the 4A Greater St. Helens League, coming up one win short of advancing to the bi-district tournament.

Karla Kalian, Battle Ground’s athletic director, issued this statement:

“Battle Ground High School has opened up the varsity girls basketball coaching position. We are looking for a coach that has previous varsity head coaching experience. In addition, we are looking for a coach that can generate excitement for the program, motivate athletes to achieve to the best of their abilities as individuals and as teammates, and teach all aspects of the game of basketball.”

Estes resigns as Mountain View coach

Mountain View athletic coordinator Adam Mathieson confirmed that Kevin Estes submitted his resignation as the girls basketball coach last week.

Estes was the head coach for two years. He led the Thunder to a 14-8 record this past season. The Thunder finished second in the 3A Greater St. Helens League then third at district.

“The search in under way immediately, and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible,” Mathieson said.

Union’s Cahill commits to Whitman

Union senior Samantha Cahill, the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League’s volleyball co-player of the year, will play volleyball at Whitman College in Walla Walla.

“Samantha Cahill is the most accomplished student-athlete I have ever worked with in my 10 years of coaching,” her coach Josh Kreunen wrote about her in a letter of recommendation to the college.

An A student who excels in advanced placement classes, Cahill also was a four-year varsity player for the Titans.

Spring athletes make college choices

Battle Ground also announced that three spring athletes have made their college choices.

Senior Maddy Alamillo, who was The Columbian’s All-Region golfer of the year last season, plans to play for Concordia University in Portland. Track and field and cross country runner Nicole Tester is headed to Montana State. And Katie Watson, a golfer, will play at Centralia College.

Washougal’s Croeni earns state honor

Washougal’s Dylan Croeni was selected as the Class 2A boys WIAA/Seattle Times state athlete of the week.

Croeni set school and meet records at the Washougal Panther Twilight meet in the 1,600 (4:23.3) and 3,200 meters (9:25.2).
