Talking points

The Columbian

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1 — The Olympic Games have barely begun, so we thought we’d get this one out of the way early: NBC’s insistence on tape-delaying the broadcast for the West Coast is insulting.

Especially with the Games taking place ON the West Coast.

Talking Points is sure it has something to do with advertising revenue and providing a boost for local news broadcasts or some other TV speak. We’re also sure we don’t care about those things.

Sports fans want to see sports when sports are happening. And these days, we’re going to find out the results anyway — even if they aren’t on TV for another three hours.

It’s 2010.

We prefer to watch life as it happens, not when NBC says it does.

2 — Speaking of the Olympics, it’s hard to believe that Apolo Ohno is still around. And that’s he’s only 27.

It seems a lifetime ago that the Seattle native first came into our living rooms, even though it was merely eight years ago.

Saturday, Ohno won his sixth Olympic medal, this time a silver. And that drove home the magic of the Olympics: 10 years ago, who could have imagined that a short-track speedskater would become a household name in this country?
