MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Bats are getting a little more protection at the Oregon Caves National Monument.

The Mail Tribune reports that Oregon biologists are trying to prevent a disease that has been killing bats in other parts of the country.

The National Park Service says a white fungus of unknown origin has been devastating bat populations since it was first discovered in 2006 in a cave near Albany, N.Y.

The cold-loving fungus invades the skin of bats, often focusing on the mucus membrane, giving it the name “white nose syndrome.”

Oregon Caves managers say they are warning visitors they will be screened for anything worn or carried into bat habitat east of the Rockies as well as in Europe in the last six years.
