Letter: Fishermen are eliminated from chain

The Columbian
Published: May 7, 2011, 12:00am

How many sea lions are in the lower Columbia River below Bonneville Dam, and how many fish of all species do they eat each day? The food chain below Bonneville Dam will collapse, and as soon as it does, most sea lions will leave; there will not be enough food to support all of them.

My brother talked with a sea lion biologist for the lower Columbia and found that observations at Bonneville Dam are just the tip of the iceberg. The wool is being pulled over our eyes by people who fear the truth. I believe that there are more sea lions today than individual species of anadromous fish entering the mouth of the Columbia River. Manipulation of facts is hard at work. The empty words of “hope,” “estimation” and “mitigation” are spoken by people who know that they are just used for manipulation. These words are the death song of salmon, steelhead and sturgeon.

Idaho has begun to push us, but sport fishermen are not their enemy; we are a revenue source and should be helped, not hindered. Without us, nothing is possible. Contact your legislators and governor about your concerns with how sport fishermen are treated and push very hard.
