HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A third Democrat has announced his intention to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

State Rep. William Tong of Stamford said Sunday he wants to prove that Americans have better opportunities than previous generations despite a prevailing belief that the American dream is in jeopardy.

Tong made his comments on WFSB-TV’s “Face the State.”

He was on the short list of potential federal prosecutors considered by President Barack Obama, Tong’s law professor at the University of Chicago. Obama nominated former White House lawyer David Fein (FINE’) as U.S. attorney for Connecticut.

Former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy are also vying for the 2012 Democratic nomination to succeed Lieberman, who was first elected in 1988.
