A Camas woman was killed and her husband injured Monday afternoon, when the 1999 Jeep Cherokee she drove lurched out of control on Interstate 84, four miles west of Ontario, Ore.

Cathy Maxwell, 62, wasn’t wearing her seatbelt about 12:30 p.m. and was thrown from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene, according to a bulletin from the Oregon State Police.

Daniel Maxwell, also 62, wore no seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Paramedics with a Life Flight helicopter flew him to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho. His injuries weren’t believed life-threatening, but he was listed in serious condition Monday evening.

The bulletin said Cathy Maxwell was driving east when the SUV drifted left and off the edge of the freeway.

She steered back to the right but lost control. The SUV then hit a guardrail and rolled over it, with parts of the SUV being torn off. The SUV rolled into the median divider and stopped there on its three remaining wheels, the bulletin said.
