Ore. city considers protections for service dogs

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A Eugene city commission is looking at a new city ordinance intended to protect service dogs from other dangerous dogs.

KEZI reports that the city’s animal abuse ordinance provides redress for the owners of pets that are attacked by vicious dogs. But service animals are not considered pets, and the protections don’t extend to them.

The Eugene Human Right’s Commission’s Accessibility Committee is set to review the proposal on Monday.

At least two service animals have been injured by a dangerous dog in the Eugene area in the last three years. The dog’s owners had to bear the costs.

Service dogs are professionally-trained dogs that help people with disabilities live more independent lives.
