Ridgefield — Students at Union Ridge Elementary School folded 1,000 paper cranes as a gesture of hope and goodwill for the Japanese people whose lives were disrupted by the earthquake and tsunami there in March.

The PTA and ASB sponsored Cranes for a Cause from April 11 to 22. The student body made posters and set out Cranes for a Cause donation cans to collect spare change from home.

Students raised $535 and the PTA added $200 more for Mercy Corps Comfort for Kids program in Japan.
