YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Yakima police have identified a 24-year-old man shot and critically wounded by a police officer as an Iraq war veteran and community college student.

Police say Raymond Faucher III of Yakima disobeyed commands to drop a pistol he took from his pocket Monday at a Bank of America branch. Bank officials had called police, saying an intoxicated man was intimidating bank employees.

The Yakima Police Department says a preliminary review indicates Officer Jeff Ely followed lethal force policy and acted to protect himself. The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Faucher was hit three times, in the head, torso and right leg.

Ely has been with the Yakima department since 2007.
