Letter: Beliefs should stay personal

Regarding Timothy May’s May 5 letter, “God condemns gay marriage,” May has taken it upon himself to speak on behalf of God. Did God pass around a proxy order that I didn’t see? What May fails to recognize is the U.S. is not a Christian nation. Not everyone is a God-fearing, Bible-reading believer. Sure, the Bible reinforces May’s beliefs and convictions, and I would suspect that as a believer he strives to live his life the way his religion dictates. But his beliefs and convictions are personal and any desire for the rest of society to also live “Mr. May’s way” should stop when he crosses the threshold of his front door.

If Christian values and beliefs were to saturate our laws, the U.S. would become no different than those countries where Shariah governs the people. I have no desire to see my country become hijacked by a Christian Taliban.

I’m writing this as a God-fearing Christian myself, by the way. To some, I’m probably a CINO (Christian In Name Only), but God knows where my heart is.
