MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) — Fire officials in the Portland suburb of Milwaukie, Ore., say four people suffered minor injuries Wednesday when a chemical cloud was released from a manufacturing business.

The release prompted the evacuation of Precision Castparts. Officials warned residents within a half-mile radius to stay inside Wednesday night.

At 5 a.m. today, emergency officials declared the area clear and workers were returning to the plant.

Two firefighters and two company employees suffered respiratory irritation. Clackamas Fire District 1 spokesman Steve McAdoo says they were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The Oregonian described the cloud as hydrochloric and nitric acid. McAdoo says a power failure affected the air scrubber that scrubs the fumes at the plant, so fumes built up and then escaped. He says the chemicals are used to clean and cut metal.

Precision Castparts’ website describes it as a manufacturer of complex metal products.
