SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon judge has denied a request by defense attorneys to cancel a death warrant hearing for a convicted murderer who says he wants to waive his remaining appeals.

Defense attorneys for 49-year-old inmate Gary Haugen had requested a 90-day delay so they could hire experts to evaluate their client’s competency to waive appeals. Instead, Marion County Circuit Judge Joseph Guimond (guy-MOND’) ordered a death warrant hearing on May 18.

Inmate Gary Haugen told the judge he has lost faith in defense attorneys and he does not wish to delay his execution any longer.

Haugen was sentenced to death in 2007 after being convicted of killing a fellow inmate.
