KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) — Archeologists using metal detectors and ground-penetrating radar have found the exact site of a Fort Klamath barracks dating back to the 19th century.

The Herald and News in Klamath Falls reports that no trace of the building had been visible for more than 40 years.

But University of Oregon archeologists on Wednesday found where the barracks stood.

The Fort Klamath military post was established by the Army in 1863 to protect settlers in Klamath, Modoc and Yahooskin Indian territory.

Klamath County Museums manager Todd Kepple said it was the first time the fort could be seen the way it was 120 years ago.
