Vancouver — The City/County Telecommunications Commission has launched its online survey of Comcast cable subscribers and non-subscribers as it reviews Comcast’s cable franchise renewal application. The confidential survey is available at http://www.cityofvancouver.us/cablefranchise, and is open to Vancouver and Clark County residents through June 12.

Results will help the commission understand community needs and interests related to cable television service from Comcast, said Jim Demmon, the commission’s cable television manager. The commission also recently conducted random telephone surveys and met with focus groups as part of its information-gathering process.

Comcast is nearing the end of a 15-year franchise approved in November 1997 to provide cable television services in Vancouver and Clark County. The franchise will expire December 31, 2012, but the commission is aiming to complete the renewal process as early as the end of this year.

Comcast, with more than 83,000 cable TV customers in Clark County, also offers many non-regulated services, including telephone and Internet access. The company pays a franchise fee of 5 percent of its gross revenues. That fee generated $1.8 million for Vancouver and $1.6 million for Clark County in 2010.
