HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A Blackfeet woman who led a 15-year legal battle to reclaim Native American land royalties that were mismanaged by the federal government is recuperating after having surgery for cancer.

Elouise Cobell of Browning, Mont., says she underwent surgery April 22 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

She said Monday from her son’s home in Las Vegas that doctors told her the procedure was “99 percent successful.” She says she was diagnosed with cancer recently but declined to say what kind.

Cobell says she is planning to return to Montana after she gets her strength back, possibly next week.

Cobell was the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit against the federal government. The lawsuit claimed the Interior Department lost, stole or misspent billions of dollars in royalties belonging to Indian account holders.

Congress has approved a $3.4 billion settlement in the case, and a final court hearing is set for June 20.
