The city said drivers should be prepared for possible delays on Fourth Plain Boulevard near Fort Vancouver Way this week as work begins on installation of 3,900 feet of ductile iron pipe to replace an aging, substandard main water line.

Construction of the water line project will take place along Fourth Plain Boulevard, between O and East Reserve streets and along P Street, between Fourth Plain Boulevard and East 29th Street. The existing water lines range in size from 2-inch- to 16-inch-diameter pipe and were installed between 1927 and 1941. Nutter Construction of Vancouver is contractor for the project with the lowest responsive bid of $652,576.

The project will require lane closures and traffic shifts through the construction work area. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians should be alert to traffic controls and possible changes, and go slowly within the construction zone. The project is expected to be completed in July 2011, weather and construction conditions permitting.

For specific information about the construction, call city of Vancouver Construction Services at 360-487-7750.
