Redistricting panel to hold Vancouver forum

Washington’s redistricting commission will hold a public forum Thursday at the Hilton Vancouver Washington as it prepares to determine the boundaries of a new congressional district.

A presentation about the legislative and congressional redistricting process will open the forum at 6 p.m. The commission then will take public testimony from 7 to 9 p.m.

2010 Census results show Washington’s population grew by 14 percent, or nearly 1 million people, in the past decade to 6.7 million people. In response, the state is working to adjust legislative boundaries to ensure each of the legislative districts and congressional districts have an equal population size.

The state will gain a 10th district in the U.S. House of Representatives because of the population gain, and the map of Washington’s 49 legislative districts will undergo some modifications. The new target population size for each legislative district is 137,236 people.

The five-member bipartisan commission was slated to begin a statewide tour gathering public comment Tuesday evening in Aberdeen. It will hold several meetings in Western Washington this month and on the eastern side of the state in June and July.

The commission must submit new congressional and legislative boundary maps by November to be approved by the Legislature and used for the 2012 elections.
