College Notebook: Concordia’s Dixson Field Athlete of Meet at CCC championships

Sophomore wins discus, hammer; second in shot put

Concordia University sophomore Gabi Dixson was named women’s Field Athlete of the Meet at the Cascade Collegiate Conference outdoor track and field championships held last weekend at Mount Hood Community College.

Dixson, who competed for Battle Ground High School, claimed conference titles in the discus and hammer throw, and was runner-up in shot put as part of a Cavaliers sweep.

Concordia swept the top four spots in the hammer throw on Friday as Dixson established a new school and meet record. Dixson’s toss of 176 feet, 2 inches surpassed a 10-year-old meet record.

Dixson notched a new career record and took the top spot in the discus on Thursday, throwing 164-11 as Concordia took the top three spots and five of the top seven. Dixson’s mark of 45-10 in the shot put on Saturday was second to teammate Kayla Xavier’s new school record of 49-9¾.

The Cavaliers swept the men’s and women’s team titles for the fifth consecutive year.

Also for Concordia:

• Junia Limage (junior, Fort Vancouver High School) was runner-up in the 800 meters in a personal best and school-record time of 2 minutes, 10.52 seconds. Limage was also third in the 400 (56.68 seconds) and sixth in the 200 with a personal-best time of 26 seconds flat. She also ran a leg on Concordia’s winning 4×400-meter relay (3:50.38).

• Kristin Sass (sophomore, Heritage High) was third in triple jump (34-5½) and ninth in long jump (15-2¼).

• Sami Andrews (senior, Camas High) was seventh in the 5,000 meters (18:06.83).

• Trevor Schwanz (senior, Prairie High School) was third in both the 100 (11.16 seconds) and 200 meters (22.47).

• Jameson Futter (junior, Washougal High School) was runner-up in long jump with a school-record mark of 22-10, and seventh in the 100 meters (11.28 seconds). He also ran with the third-place 4×100 relay (42.58 seconds).

Porter, Breihof place at GNAC track meet

Western Washington distance runners Sarah Porter and Lauren Breihof each had a pair of top-three finishes at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championships last weekend at Monmouth, Ore. Both were named NCAA Division II West Region All-Stars on Tuesday.

Hockinson High School graduate Porter won the 10,000 meters with a time of 36 minutes, 33.87 seconds; and was runner-up in the 1,500 meters with a school-record time of 4:30.32.

Mountain View High School graduate Breihof placed third in two races, finishing the 10,000 on Friday in 37:00.55 and the 5,000 on Saturday in 17:58.11. Breihof was also named a GNAC Academic All-Star for the second year.

Boise State’s Nelson wins WAC hammer

Boise State thrower Alex Nelson claimed the Western Athletic Conference title in the men’s hammer throw at the WAC outdoor track and field championships in Honolulu last weekend. A junior, the Evergreen High graduate’s mark was 206 feet, 11 inches.

PSU softball team in Seattle regional

The Pacific Coast Softball Conference champion Portland State Vikings will begin NCAA tournament play in the Seattle Regional, facing Washington at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Senior shortstop Arielle Wiser, a Battle Ground High School graduate, was named to the First Team PCSC All-Mountain Division squad.

Washington (34-14) is 37-1 all-time against Portland State (34-16). In two previous trips to regionals in 2006 and 2009, the Vikings are 1-4.

PCSC honors Voelz

Sacramento State junior pitcher Shelby Voelz was named Honorable Mention All-Coastal Division by the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.

The Hudson’s Bay High graduate went 5-4 with two saves and a 2.78 ERA, including a 5-2 mark and a 2.79 ERA against PCSC competition. A First Team choice last season, Voelz missed nine games during the middle of the season with a concussion. Most of her 19 appearances were in relief.

Linfield softball in D-III nationals

The Linfield College softball team won four games by an aggregate score of 49-0 to dominate an NCAA Division III regional tournament in Pella, Iowa, over the weekend.

The top-ranked Wildcats (45-2) have tied the school record for wins and advance to the eight-team NCAA Finals beginning Friday in Salem, Va., opening against State University of New York-Cortland.

Linfield’s Staci Doucette, an Evergreen High graduate who plays first base, was named to the all-tournament team.

Linfield tennis falls at D-III regionals

The Linfield College women’s tennis team defeated Texas-Tyler in the opening round of NCAA Division III regional competition last weekend in Claremont, Calif., before falling in the second round to Pomona-Pitzer.

Linfield junior Abby Olbrich and senior Sarah Click, also former Skyview High School teammates, both won their singles matches and combined for a doubles win against UTT.

Pomona-Pitzer swept to a 5-0 win to end Linfield’s season. Olbrich and Click lost their doubles match, and both of their singles matches were abandoned when Pomona-Pitzer clinched the victory.

Olbrich was among 32 singles players selected to compete in the individual tournament of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships, May 27-29 in Claremont, Calif.

WWU crew invited to defend title again

Six-time defending team champion Western Washington received a berth to represent the West Region at the NCAA Division II national championships on May 27-29 at Lake Natoma near Sacramento, Calif. Columbia River graduate Jean Piette, a WWU junior, is the No. 6 rower in the Vikings’ varsity eight shell.

Thomas sets record

Gonzaga freshman Emily Thomas set a school record in the 10,000 meters Saturday at the West Coast Invitational in Salem. The Camas High graduate placed fifth with a time of 36 minutes, 3.13 seconds.

CWU eliminated

Central Washington suffered a pair of one-run losses at the NCAA Division II softball West Regional in Chico, Calif. Between falling 2-1 to UC San Diego and 3-2 to Chico State, the Wildcats eliminated rival Western Washington with an 8-4 victory.

CWU senior Lauren Hadenfeld pitched three complete games in the two days. The Evergreen High School graduate was 24-11 as a senior with a 2.22 earned run average, pitching 205⅓ of the team’s 325⅓ innings this season as the Wildcats finished 34-16.
