Flood risk remains in E. Ore., C. Ore. OK

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Some areas of Eastern Oregon are still at risk of flooding as temperatures warm and a heavy snowpack begins to melt but central Oregon should be able to withstand a large runoff.

The Bulletin reports that areas hit by flooding triggered by heavy rains in the mountains last weekend are recovering, including the town of John Day, where water from Canyon Creek flooded the high school and many homes and businesses.

But water managers say the geology of the local river basins, along with lighter rainfall this week, means that central Oregon will probably not face the flooding issues swamping parts of Eastern Oregon.

Meanwhile, in Burns, volunteers and crews were filling sandbags to help shore up a levee that stands between the Silvies River and part of the town.
