DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a convicted child rapist has been arrested at the southern Arizona border for failing to register as a sex offender.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say the 34-year-old man is from Phoenix, but didn’t immediately release his name.

They say he was taken into custody Thursday after attempting to enter the country through the Douglas port pedestrian processing area.

CBP officers discovered the man was convicted of three counts of rape of a child in Seattle in November 2002.

They say a records check also showed the man had multiple warrants for failure to register as a sex offender and for escape of community custody.

He’s been turned over to the Douglas Police Department for extradition.

It was unclear Friday whether the man had legal representation yet.
