BEND, Ore. (AP) — The family of an Oregon woman killed nearly 30 years ago in Bend is fighting to keep the man convicted of her murder behind bars.

KTVZ-TV in Bend reports that Jeffrey Spoonire was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the shooting death of Mary Ann Thomas in 1982.

Spoonire is now up for parole every other year — forcing the victim’s mother, Dorothy Thomas, and her family to file petitions to keep him in prison.

The 85-year-old Thomas says that if Spoonire is released, he would come back to Deschutes County in central Oregon — something she and her family hope will never happen.
